Just got through exams, and then through my fall break. Also, all of my free playing-with-computers time has been sucked up by the new Web site I’m setting up for the Wharton Net Impact club, which is the umbrella organization for student groups interested in corporate social responsibility. So no posts recently.
Almost every student club ends their introductory meeting, in which they detail all the open club leadership positions, with the following plea: “And if any of you have any HTML skills, we desperately need someone to help out with our web site, which hasn’t been updated since 1937.” This is generally the point at which I dive under my desk. There is no way I am becoming web master for 200 student organizations.
But Wharton Net Impact really needed the help, and when I mentioned to Bernadette that I, um, might know a thing or two about setting up dynamically updateable web sites with multiauthor content, she got this dewy look of gratitude in her eye that I knew full well meant I would be rooting around in the innards of Moveable Type for weeks to come.
Now I have a small request. I want to conduct a little experiment, one which I suspect will fail, but which nevertheless should be interesting (to me). I can tell from my web server logs that too many people are reading this site for you to consist solely of friends and relatives. Plus, I just don’t know that many people in the Netherlands. I’d like to offer you grateful strangers out there a chance to give something back.
I’ve designed a mock-up page for the new web site. I’m satisfied with the layout, but I’m not at all pleased with the crappy blue banner that reads “Wharton Net Impact” across the top of the page. Anyone with a copy of Photoshop, some graphic design skills, and about half an hour of free time should be able to do something better.
So how about it? Can anyone email me a better banner? I don’t care what color the background field is, although the banner field does have to be horizontally resizable like it is now. Clip-art and other flourishes are fine, although by no means necessary. Dimensions don’t matter, although the current size of 100 x 700 pixels and 18 kb should be used as a rough guideline. Really, I just want something that looks a little nicer than what’s up there now. .gif files are nice, .psd are better.
Please use “Wharton Net Impact” as the subject of any email, so that it gets through my spam filter.
Contests need a prize, so let’s see…if I end up using the banner you send me, you can name the topic of a future post. Or you can submit a list of suggestions for those stupid little slogans in rotation on the upper-right hand corner of adamstein.org. Also, you will live a full life, and, upon your eventual peaceful death, you will be whisked immediately to the denominationally-appropriate paradise of your choosing.
Thanks. Now get to work.
