Thai reading list

May 30, 2003

Seen on the “Insight Thailand” shelf of the bookstore adjoining the Starbucks in which I enjoyed my first espresso-based coffee drink in five months:

  • Thailand, Land of Beautiful Women
  • Patpong Sisters (Patpong is the red light district of Bangkok)
  • Pattaya, Patpong on Steroids (Pattaya is the red light district of all of Thailand, sort of the mother of all red light districts)
  • Money Number One, The Single Man’s Survival Guide to Pattaya
  • “Hello My Big, Big Honey”
  • No Money, No Honey!
  • Living in the Land of Milk and Honey
  • Colonel Lee’s Hardship Posting (featuring a cover photo of a 50ish man spanking a Thai woman bent over his lap)

Because every filthy habit known to man is usually ascribed solely to Americans, I feel compelled to point out that sex tourists seem to be disproportionately British and German.  You may liberally draw uncharitable conclusions about these countries’ national characters on the basis of this unsubstantiated factoid.  Also, be sure to ask British and German citizens about this distasteful phenomenon the next time you meet one of them.  Remember to affect a disgusted and accusatory tone.

Still, though, it is nice to back in Bangkok, a sleazy city I continue to like quite a bit more than I am supposed to.
