And the answer is…

May 18, 2003

Zhuang, of course.  Zhuang is the mysterious sixth language that appears on Chinese currency.  Mike was quickest on the draw, with a link to the appropriate web page.

The Zhuang language is mainly spoken in Guangxi Zhuangzu Autonomous Region, in the south of China. This is the largest minority language in China with about 15 million speakers.

Incidentally, just so no one thinks I’m completely mentally deficient, I did check Google before throwing this question out to the masses.  I am aware that Google is the way, the light, the all-seeing eye.  I consult Google before making any major life decision.  I confer with Google first, and only then do I turn to my family, or a denominationally-appropriate clergy member, or the trauma center of the nearest hospital.

But notice that the link Mike (and others) sent me is hosted by Geocities.  And realize that the Chinese government, in its infinite wisdom and mercy, has barred all access to pages hosted by Geocities, perhaps for fear that the Chinese populace will be exposed to the harmful effects of thousands of pictures of house cats and massive doses of Ally McBeal fan fiction.  I can’t rightly say I blame them.

For being the first to reply, Mike wins a framed glossy of my friend Nik wearing a man-sized diaper.  These things have been moving like hotcakes, I tell you.  Hotcakes.
