I saw a disturbing thing today. What I saw was this: one teenage boy lying on the ground while another boy kicked him in the head. One kick, then another kick. Then the boy on the ground stood up, got on the back of a moto, and took off, bleeding heavily from a cut over his eye.
Witnessing this sort of thuggishness out in the countryside raised the possibility of violence where I had thought none existed. I feel very safe in Vietnam, but I will have to remember not to mouth off the next time a kid throws a rock at my bike.
