Paso John Garner
This is pretty much the money shot in the Torres National Park. The sun happened to break just as we came over the pass, offering us our first glorious view of the glacier. Glacier Grey is a tongue of ice branching off of Hielo Sur, the third largest ice cap (and hence the third-largest reservoir of fresh water) in the world, after Antarctica and Greenland. The ice stretches a few hundred miles to the north. (Note: the name John Garner will be familiar to former coworkers of mine. I assume the fact that this name is shared by a mountain pass in the Torres del Paine National Park is some sort of cosmic coincidence, and not evidence of a secret double life.) |
